Spring Cleaning Your Skincare & Makeup

Spring Cleaning Your Skincare & Makeup

It’s officially Spring! Spring is a time of renewal. And for a lot of us, that renewal includes deep cleaning our homes, decluttering and getting rid of things that we don’t need. But spring cleaning doesn’t just have to be for the house. In fact, it’s the perfect time to clean through your skincare and makeup stockpiles! Just like decluttering your living space, refreshing your beauty supplies can rejuvenate your skin and ensure you're using products that are effective and safe.

Have you ever wondered why we “Spring Clean”? It actually has strong cultural, religious and historical links. Spring cleaning has ties to the holiday of Passover. The Torah commands that not a crumb of leaven (the yeast used to make bread rise) is allowed in the house during Passover and because of that, the entire home would be thoroughly cleaned. It also dates back to a time when homes were heated by wood and lit by candles and lanterns, leaving layers of soot everywhere. When spring arrived, it was time to open the windows, shake out the rugs and linens and clean away all the winter grime.

A time-honored tradition, spring cleaning is not only good for our homes, it’s good for our mind too! After being trapped inside during winter with its short days and lack of sunlight, spring is sign of what’s to come. Sunshine, warmer days, time outside and rejuvenation. Kicking off spring with a thorough cleaning is great way to improve focus, relieve stress and improve our mood with a more positive and forward-thinking mindset.

And if it’s not already, spring cleaning your beauty supplies should become part of your annual tradition. Over time, skincare and makeup products can accumulate bacteria, lose effectiveness and even expire. Using expired or contaminated products can lead to skin irritation, breakouts and other undesirable effects. By spring cleaning your beauty collection, you can maintain the efficacy of your products while promoting the overall health of your skin.

Take the time to go through your products and throw away any unused and expired makeup and skincare products. Pay special attention to products with SPF. Sunscreen is our first line of defense against harmful UV rays, but its effectiveness diminishes over time. Expired sunscreen not only provides inadequate protection but can also cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. If any of your sunscreen or products with SPF have passed their expiration date, toss them! Investing in fresh sunscreen ensures that you're safeguarding your skin against sun damage effectively and we all know that sun damage is a leading cause of aging skin.

Another item that often gets overlooked during spring cleaning is mascara. While mascara may seem harmless, using old or expired mascara can pose risks to your eye health. Mascara tubes are breeding grounds for bacteria! As a general rule of thumb, mascara should be replaced every 3 months. If your mascara has dried out, developed an unusual odor or caused any irritation, it's time to throw it away and invest in a fresh tube.

Spring cleaning isn't just for your home - it's essential for maintaining the health and effectiveness of your skincare and makeup products. So now that Spring has sprung. take the time to declutter your beauty supplies, invest in fresh products and prioritize the health of your skin and eyes. With a refreshed beauty arsenal, you'll be ready to step into the new season with confidence AND glowing skin.
