Collagen is a protein. In fact, it's the most abundant protein in the human body. It's found in all of our connective tissue. Collagen makes up a whopping 75% of our skin!
When you think about collagen, picture it as a strong, chain link fence, or scaffolding...forming the structure of your skin. It's what keeps your skin strong and firm.
Unfortunately, from about the age of 21, we start to lose collagen at about 1% per year. Once we hit menopause, we lose what's left at 5% per year!
Elastin is the other structural component of our skin. Like collagen, elastin is a protein, but one with highly elastic properties. It's what gives skin the ability to "snap" back. Skin with higher levels of elastin is less prone to wrinkle from frowning and squinting.
Like collagen, elastin levels decrease as we age, leading to sagging, wrinkling, and the dreaded "crepey" skin.
While anything with the word "acid" in it sounds like something to avoid at all costs, Hyaluronic Acid is actually a friend. It acts as your skin's natural moisturizer. It's part of the reason young skin is so plump and glowing.
And, you guessed it. As we age our levels of Hyaluronic Acid decline.
So, how do we slow down the process and get this "Holy Trinity" back into Youth Mode?
Lifestyle and nutrition are certainly factors to look at. Smoking, drinking excessively and consuming sugar are three sure fire ways to destroy collagen fibers, so changing those habits is a good place to start. Adding antioxidant rich foods to your diet is a good idea too.
However, it's not enough if you're going up against Father Time. You'll want to arm yourself with a clinically dosed supplement AND a highly effective topical treatment. Using one or the other isn't an option. To get back into Youth Mode, you need them both.
